Health insurance in Switzerland: what you need to know
In Switzerland, health insurance is compulsory and governed by the Federal Law on Health Insurance. It enables all citizens to protect themselves against the risks associated with illness and accidents.
Swiss residents are free to choose their health insurer, which must accept all new policyholders, regardless of their state of health or age.
Basic insurance offers the same benefits to everyone, although premiums vary depending on a number of factors:
  • Place of residence: Premiums are generally higher in the city than in the country.
  • Deductible: The higher the chosen deductible, the lower the premium.
  • Age of insured: Premiums increase with age.
To supplement basic health insurance, it is possible to take out supplementary insurance to cover costs not covered by basic health insurance. Benefits and premiums vary from company to company. Unlike basic insurance, supplementary insurances can refuse to cover a person, or make risk-related reservations.
